How to Install Desktop Products for ArcGIS 9

This page will not provide step-by-step instructions on how to install each and every product, but rather provide overall guidelines and procedures when installing ArcGIS Desktop products. If you have questions about anything listed on this page, please contact RDMS at gis-info@udel.edu.

If your computer is connected to the UD network or is otherwise connected to the Internet continuously, we suggest installing ArcInfo.  This will require a constant connection to the UD license server.  If your computer is not connected, it is suggested to install ArcEditor or ArcView single-use.

NOTE: ArcGIS Desktop is the name given to the collection of three products: ArcInfo, ArcEditor, and ArcView. All three products looks and act identical; they only differ in the functionality exposed and types of data supported. ArcInfo is the most powerful of the three and shoul dbe installed. ArcEditor and ArcView are available as single-use editions, meaning they do not require connetion to a license server and can be installed on non-networked computers.

ArcGIS Desktop (ArcInfo, ArcEditor, ArcView) Floating License Version

Below you will find general guidelines on installing ArcInfo Desktop software.  Your computer must be able to connect to the UD license server in order for ArcGIS Desktop to run. If you experience licensing problems with your software, please complete an UD IT Help Request Form.

  1. Insert the ArcGIS Desktop 9 DVD into your computer. If the installation program does not start automatically, manually run Setup.exe from the DVD. You may also be required to reboot your system after this install.
  2. At the first splash screen select "Install ArcGIS Desktop".
  3. When the installation program starts, you will see a button labeled "Install Guide". Please review this web-based guide before installation, if needed.
  4. When prompted to connect to a license server choose to "Connect Later".
  5. Choose Complete installation (not Typical). All extensions will be included when using the Complete option.
  6. When asked to choose between ArcInfo, ArcEditor or ArcView, choose ArcInfo.
  7. If asked to install Python, select Yes. Python is required for all geoprocessing scripts and models. The default install destination is C:\Python works well, but you may choose another location if needed.
  8. After installation, connect to the UD central license server.
  9. After a successful startup of ArcMap or ArcCatalog, download and install the latest service patch.

ArcEditor and ArcView Single-Use License Version

Single Use products do not require a license server but do require registering the software online using a set of registration codes. It is highly recommended that your computer is connected to the Internet during installation to complete the registration. All Single Use products must be registered before they can be used. Contact RDMS to obtain the necessary registration codes.

  1. Insert the ArcView/ArcEditor 9 Single Use DVD into your computer.
  4. Choose Complete installation (not Typical). All extensions will be included when using the Complete option.
  5. If asked to install Python, select Yes. Python is required for all geoprocessing scripts and models. The default install destination is C:\Python works well, but you may choose another location if needed.
  6. At the end of the installation, you will be asked to register ArcView/ArcEditor and any extensions. Do so by selecting, "Register now by using the Internet." Your computer must be connected to the Internet to complete this registration process. If you choose not to register your extensions now, you may do so at any time using the ArcGIS Desktop Administrator.
  7. Contact RDMS to obtain any necessary registration codes.
  8. After a successful startup of ArcMap or ArcCatalog, download and install the latest service patch.

Service Packs and Updates

It is highly recommended to update ArcGIS Desktop software with the most recent Service Packs. These service packs are released by ESRI and are downloadable from http://support.esri.com/index.cfm?fa=downloads.patchesServicePacks.listPatches&PID=43. To install a Service Pack:

  1. Ensure ArcGIS software is installed.
  2. Go to http://support.esri.com.
  3. Click on the "Software" Tab.
  4. Select the appropriate ArcGIS Desktop Product.
  5. Select "Patches and Service Packs".
  6. Click on the most recent Service Pack listed for ArcGIS 9.x and follow the instructions.

If you are running other ESRI products (ArcEngine, ArcGIS Server, ArcIMS, ArcSDE) you must update each product to the same service pack version. In many cases, the software will not run unless you do so.
